I Wanna Be Around

I Wanna Be Around es una grandísima canción, una de esas joyas musicales que encapsulan el genio de una época dorada del jazz y el pop. Compuesta por Sadie Vimmerstedt y Johnny Mercer, fue popularizada por Tony Bennett en 1963, siendo su versión la primera en llegar a las listas musicales.

Musicalmente es una pieza magistral en su composición, con un elegante arreglo y un fabuloso acompañamiento orquestal que realza la voz de Bennett sin eclipsarla.

El tema ha perdurado a lo largo del tiempo, siendo incluida en bandas sonoras de películas, además de realizarse nuevas versiones, como la que el propio Bennett realizó junto con Bono que apareció dentro del álbum del primero, en 2006 y que llevó por título Duets: An American Classic.

Ha tenido más versiones a lo largo de los años, como las realizadas por Aretha Franklin, Bobby Darin, Brenda Lee, Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé o en este 2024, la estupenda versión realizada por Matt Dusk junto a The Lou Pomanti Orchestra.

That's Life es una canción escrita por el compositor estadounidense Dean Kay y la cantante y compositora estadounidense Kelly Gordon que fue grabada por vez primera en 1963 por la cantante estadounidense Marion Montgomery.

Posiblemente la versión más conocida sea la que en 1966 realizó Frank Sinatra para su álbum del mismo título con la que consiguió un gran éxito, tras el cual, fue grabada posteriormente por otros artistas entre los que se encuentran Aretha Franklin, Shirley Bassey, James Brown, Van Morrison, Michael Bolton y Michael Bublé.

Cuando Sinatra escuchó por vez primera la canción en la voz de la cantante estadounidense OC Smith, pidió enseguida a su hija Nancy que le buscase en editor lo antes posible porque quería grabarla, y así lo hizo, interpretándola por primera vez en su especial de televisión A Man and His Music - Part II en 1966, con arreglos del compositor y director de orquesta estadounidense Nelson Riddle, aunque la versión grabada tuvo los arreglos y fue dirigida por el pianista y director de orquesta estadounidense Ernie Freeman.

La canción ha perdurado a lo largo del tiempo y ha sido versionada por numerosos artistas a lo largo de los años como Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Billie Holiday, Michael Bublé o la que hace en el 2023 el cantante canadiense Matt Dusk.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

Si hay una canción que no puede faltar en la lista de reproducción de Navidad, esa es It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas. Escrita en 1951 por el compositor y director de orquesta estadounidense Meredith Willson, esta canción tiene el poder de transportarnos a esa época especial del año, cuando todo empieza a brillar con luces, el aire se llena de alegría y el espíritu navideño se apodera de nosotros.

Originalmente fue escrita para el musical Here’s Love de Broadway en 1963, y rápidamente se convirtió en un clásico de la Navidad. A lo largo de los años, la canción ha sido interpretada por muchos artistas, y cada versión le da un toque único y especial.

El actor y cantante estadounidense Dean Martin grabó en 1955 una versión de la canción y con su encantador e inconfundible estilo, su interpretación ha sido una de las versiones favoritas durante décadas.

No nos podemos olvidar de otras versiones emblemáticas como la de Johnny Mathis, que se hizo muy popular tras aparecer en Home Alone 2: Lost in New York convirtiéndose en uno de los 10 mejores éxitos navideños. El tema ha tenido infinidad de versiones a lo largo de los años, entre las que se encuentran las que hicieron Avicii, Muse, Sammy David Jr., Michael Bublé, Joe Bonamassa, George Michael, The Pussycat Dolls y la impresionante versión que en 1965 hizo la cantante, compositora y pianista estadounidense Nina Simone para su álbum I Put A Spell On You, demostrando toda su fuerza vocal y el color y el calor que le ponía a cada una de sus interpretaciones.

Dream a Little Dream of Me

Dream a Little Dream of Me es una preciosa canción compuesta por Fabian Andre y Wilbur Schwandt y escrita por Gus Kahn en 1931 y grabada por primera vez ese mismo año por Ozzie Nelson y su Orquesta. Pronto le seguiría una nueva versión realizada por Wayne King y su Orquesta con Ernie Birchill como interprete.

La canción fue obteniendo un gran éxito, principalmente a lo largo de los años 50, en especial cuando en 1957 la cantante y actriz estadounidense Doris Day le dio su toque personal con un tempo lento diferente a la melodía que había tenido hasta entonces.

Ese formato de balada es el que tomaron a partir de entonces las numerosas versiones que ha venido teniendo a lo largo de los años hasta nuestros tiempos... versiones como las que realizaron en su momento Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong y Ella Fitzgerald en 1950 (grabaron respectivas versiones en solitario), aunque posiblemente una de las versiones más conocidas es la que en 1968 hizo el grupo vocal The Mamas & The Papas, llegando a vender más de un millón de copias solamente en Estados Unidos.

En épocas más cercanas, también destacan las versiones que han hecho Robbie Williams junto a Lily Allen, Diana Krall, Michael Bublé o la actriz australiana Nicole Kidman.

Sway - Quien será

Sway es el título en inglés de la canción Quien será compuesta por el compositor mexicano Luis Demetrio, quien vendió sus derechos al compositor mexicano Pablo Beltrán Ruiz, y que la grabó por vez primera en 1953 como un tema meramente instrumental, aunque posteriormente la grabaría en distintas ocasiones para distintos álbumes. Según el propio Demetrio, Pablo Beltrán solamente compuso los dos primeros acordes y el resto de la canción junto a la letra es obra de Demetrio, aunque al vender los derechos, a veces ha sido atribuida al segundo en vez de al primero.

Demetrio la compuso en un principio para el cantante mexicano Pedro Infante, el cual llegó a interpretarla en 1954, llegando a convertirse en una de las canciones más conocidas dentro de su repertorio y siendo un éxito en toda América Latina.

En 1954 escribe la letra de la versión inglesa el letrista estadounidense Norman Gimbel y grabada por el gran Dean Martin, llegando al Nº 16 en las listas musicales de Estados Unidos y al Nº 6 en el Reino Unido.

A lo largo de los años la canción no ha pasado de moda... tanto es así que, el tema ha tenido muchísimas versiones, siendo en la actualidad una de las más conocidas la que hizo en 2003 para su disco de lanzamiento Michael Bublé.

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) es un tema escrito por la cantante y compositora estadounidense Ellie Greenwich junto al también compositor y cantante estadounidense Jeff Barry y el productor Phil Spector, que fue interpretado por vez primera en 1963 por la cantante norteamericana Darlene Love, que aunque en un primer momento no consiguió mucha popularidad, con el tiempo consiguió lograr un gran éxito y está considerada como una de las mejores canciones navideñas de rock and roll según la revista Rolling Stone.

La canción ha tenido muchas versiones, alguna de ellas interpretadas por artistas como U2, Michael Bublé, Jon Bon Jovi, The Mavericks y Mariah Carey que la grabó en 1994 para su álbum navideño Merry Christmas y que sin duda, es una de las versiones más conocidas.
