I Put A Spell On You

Hay canciones que no te pertenecen a ti, sino que se adueñan de ti, y eso es lo que me pasa al dejarme arrastrar por la fuerza magnética de I Put A Spell On You... una pieza que tiene algo de ritual, de posesión y de deseo incontrolable. Sientes esa tensión en el aire, como si el tiempo se detuviera justo antes de que estalle la tormenta.

Es un tema que ha sobrevivido a décadas y géneros. La versión original nació en 1956 de la mano del cantante afroamericano Screamin' Jay Hawkins bajo el sello OKeh Records. Curiosamente, Hawkins la escribió como una balada de amor, pero cuenta la leyenda que, tras una sesión de grabación regada con alcohol, se convirtió en ese rugido salvaje que definió su carrera.

Ha sido versionada por leyendas como la gran Nina Simone, Creedence Clearwater Revival y Bryan Ferry, convirtiéndose en una de las "500 canciones que dieron forma al rock and roll" según el Salón de la Fama.

Pero si hay una versión que me detiene el pulso, además de la de Nina Simone y con su permiso, es la que Annie Lennox grabó para su álbum de versiones de clásicos americanos, Nostalgia, lanzado en 2014 por Island Records. Annie eleva la canción a otro nivel de sofisticación, convirtiendo el tema en una declaración de poder absoluto.

La canción fue el primer sencillo del álbum y cobró una nueva vida cinematográfica al ser incluida en la banda sonora de la película Cincuenta sombras de Grey, donde su atmósfera oscura y sensual encajó a la perfección.

Escuchar a Annie Lennox cantar esta pieza es recordar que el amor también puede ser un conjuro del que una no siempre quiere escapar.

Just Because You Can es una de esas canciones que te envuelven desde la primera nota. El tema está interpretado por la cantante neoyorkina Catherine Russell y forma parte de su álbum Inside This Heart of Mine que se lanzó en 2010.

La voz de Catherine tiene una calidez especial y en esta canción, con un aire de jazz clásico está acompañada de una instrumentación elegante y envolvente que te lleva a un viaje por el jazz, el swing y el blues, con esa esencia vintage que Catherine Russell domina tan bien, mostrándonos su talento para revivir sonidos clásicos pero manteniendo su esencia y marca particular.

My Reverie

My Reverie es una preciosa canción de 1938, escrita por Larry Clinton y que está basada en la pieza para piano Rêverie de Claude Debussy. A lo largo de los años, ha sido interpretada por muchos artistas y en 1959 la cantante estadounidense Keely Smith incluyó su versión en el álbum Be My Love bajo la orquesta de Billy Vaughn.

Keely Smith posiblemente sea una de las voces más maravillosas del jazz norteamericano y su interpretación de My Reverie refleja su estilo elegante con el que nos dejo para la eternidad esta grandísima versión.

El tema está compuesto por la propia Karen junto a Rocio Betina Rodriguez y Hector Hugo Gutierrez Flores, y letra de Pamela Phillips Oland, quien fuera la última letrista de Frank Sinatra.

Ain't No Sunshine

Ain’t No Sunshine es una de esas canciones que van directas al corazón. Es una canción que habla del amor, la pérdida y la ausencia de alguien que es el centro de tu mundo.

La canción fue lanzada en 1971 como parte del álbum Just As I Am del cantante estadounidense Bill Withers, el cual dijo dijo que estaba inspirada en la película Days of Wine and Roses (1962), que trataba sobre una relación marcada por la dependencia emocional. Con solo una guitarra, un bajo, unas cuerdas y la inconfundible voz de Withers, este logra crear una atmósfera que te envuelve por completo. Fue su primer gran éxito, pero parece que siempre ha estado ahí, como si fuera una de esas canciones eternas que nunca pasan de moda.

El tema alcanzó el número 3 en la lista Billboard Hot 100 y ganó un Grammy en 1972 por la Mejor Canción de R&B. La grabación incluye a músicos legendarios como Stephen Stills en la guitarra.

La repetición de la frase "I know" ocurre 26 veces seguidas, y Bill Withers contó que inicialmente pensó en escribir más letra, pero los productores musicales lo convencieron de dejarlo tal cual estaba. Está considerada como una de las mejores canciones de todos los tiempos y ha sido incluida en el Salón de la Fama del Grammy.

What a Difference a Day Makes es una canción escrita en 1934 por la compositora mexicana María Grever bajo el nombre de Cuando vuelva a tu lado, grabada por vez primera ese mismo año por la Orquesta Pedro Vía y cuya versión en inglés fue popularizada por la gran Dinah Washington en 1959.

La letra fue adaptada al inglés por el letrista y compositor estadounidense Stanley Adams y aunque fue interpretada por vez primera en 1934 por el clarinetista británico Harry Roy y su orquesta y grabada por el cantante Jimmy Ague, no fue hasta 1959 y en la maravillosa voz de Dinah Washington donde encontró su versión definitiva, con la que consiguió ganar un Premio Grammy ese mismo año a la Mejor Interpretación de rhythm and blues y que posteriormente, en 1998, fue incluida en el Salón de la Fama de los Grammy.

Desde el primer acorde, la canción te envuelve mientras te dejas llevar por los maravillosos arreglos orquestales y la voz de la gran Dinah... la verdadera joya musical de esta versión.

La interpretación de Dinah Washington es perfecta con su inigualable fraseo en la que da significado y emoción a cada palabra y con la que que consiguió consolidarse como una de las más grandes voces de la historia de la música.

I Wanna Be Around es una grandísima canción, una de esas joyas musicales que encapsulan el genio de una época dorada del jazz y el pop. Compuesta por Sadie Vimmerstedt y Johnny Mercer, fue popularizada por Tony Bennett en 1963, siendo su versión la primera en llegar a las listas musicales.

Musicalmente es una pieza magistral en su composición, con un elegante arreglo y un fabuloso acompañamiento orquestal que realza la voz de Bennett sin eclipsarla.

El tema ha perdurado a lo largo del tiempo, siendo incluida en bandas sonoras de películas, además de realizarse nuevas versiones, como la que el propio Bennett realizó junto con Bono que apareció dentro del álbum del primero, en 2006 y que llevó por título Duets: An American Classic.

That's Life es una canción escrita por el compositor estadounidense Dean Kay y la cantante y compositora estadounidense Kelly Gordon que fue grabada por vez primera en 1963 por la cantante estadounidense Marion Montgomery.

Posiblemente la versión más conocida sea la que en 1966 realizó Frank Sinatra para su álbum del mismo título con la que consiguió un gran éxito, tras el cual, fue grabada posteriormente por otros artistas entre los que se encuentran Aretha Franklin, Shirley Bassey, James Brown, Van Morrison, Michael Bolton y Michael Bublé.

Cuando Sinatra escuchó por vez primera la canción en la voz de la cantante estadounidense OC Smith, pidió enseguida a su hija Nancy que le buscase en editor lo antes posible porque quería grabarla, y así lo hizo, interpretándola por primera vez en su especial de televisión A Man and His Music - Part II en 1966, con arreglos del compositor y director de orquesta estadounidense Nelson Riddle, aunque la versión grabada tuvo los arreglos y fue dirigida por el pianista y director de orquesta estadounidense Ernie Freeman.
