Hoy me dejo envolver por una de esas canciones que huelen a hogar, a invierno y a nostalgia... Merry Christmas, Darling, la balada navideña con la que Carpenters dejaron una huella en la música navideña.

La canción nació en 1970, publicada como single por A&M Records. La letra la escribió Frank Pooler, un texto que había comenzado a esbozar cuando era adolescente y que años después retomó cuando Karen y Richard Carpenter buscaban material navideño. Richard compuso la melodía, y lo que surgió fue una de las interpretaciones más delicadas de Karen, una de las voces más hermosas de todos los tiempos. Ese primer lanzamiento llevó la canción al número 1 de la lista Billboard Christmas Singles en 1970, y volvería a hacerlo en 1971 y 1973.

En 1978, Karen Carpenter, regrabó la voz para el álbum Christmas Portrait, también bajo A&M Records, siendo esta la versión más conocida, pero muchos años después, en 2018, la canción volvió a renacer cuando Richard Carpenter produjo The Carpenters With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, un álbum que recupera grabaciones originales de Karen y las rodea con nuevos arreglos orquestales. En él aparece una nueva versión de Merry Christmas, Darling, donde su voz se mezcla con la elegancia de la Royal Philharmonic.

Musicalmente, la canción sigue siendo una balada exquisita con armonías suaves, acordes de jazz que acarician la melodía, una orquestación excelente y esa manera única que tenía Karen de hacer eterna una canción... como si el tiempo se detuviera a su alrededor.

Para mí, Merry Christmas, Darling es un rincón cálido, una pequeña luz que ralentiza el mundo durante unos segundos, una canción que me acompaña y me recuerda que también en la nostalgia hay belleza.

(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays

Cada vez que escucho Home for the Holidays, siento que esta canción captura a la perfección el deseo de volver al lugar donde pertenecemos en esta época del año.
La canción fue escrita por Robert Allen, con letra de Al Stillman, y salió al mundo en 1954. Perry Como fue el primero en grabarla, y su versión rápidamente se convirtió en un clásico. Con su inconfundible voz, Como le dio un toque cálido que te hace sentir como si estuvieras junto a una chimenea, mientras fuera hace frío.
Con los años, Home for the Holidays ha sido versionada por muchos artistas, cada uno añadiendo su propia magia. Pero si tengo que destacar una versión que realmente me toca el corazón, es la de los Carpenters. Karen Carpenter tenía una de las voces más hermosas y limpias que he escuchado y escucharla siempre me emociona y me llega al corazón.

A Song for You

A Song for You es una preciosa canción escrita y grabada originalmente por el cantante y pianista Leon Russell para su primer álbum homónimo en solitario lanzado en 1970.

El tema ha sido grabado por más de 200 artistas de distintos géneros musicales y una de las primera versiones que consiguió un gran éxito fue la que en 1971 realizó el cantante estadounidense Andy Williams, pero en 1994, el cantante y compositor estadounidense Ray Charles grabó una versión que le hizo ganar el Grammy a la Mejor Interpretación Vocal Masculina de R&B.

Pero ha habido versiones igual de maravillosas, como la que en 1972 realizaron The Carpenters, en 1973 Willie Nelson, en 1974 Aretha Franklin, en 2005 Herbie Hancock con Christina Aguilera o en 2011 Amy Winehouse, entre muchísimas más.

En enero de 2018 A Song for You entro a formar parte del Salón de la Fama de los Grammy.

Con motivo del 90 cumpleaños del gran Willie Nelson celebrado el 29 y 30 de abril de 2023 en el legendario Hollywood Bowl de Los Ángeles, numerosos artistas se reunieron para homenajearle, lanzándose el álbum grabado en directo en este 2024 bajo el título Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 (Live at the Hollywood Bowl), siendo una de las canciones interpretadas A Song for You por parte de la banda estadounidense The Lumineers, creando una maravillosa versión de esta canción atemporal.

Estamos ante una canción que bajo su sencillez nos habla sobre el poder de la música para expresar los sentimientos más profundos.

Top of the World

Top of the World es una canción escrita y compuesta en 1972 por Richard Carpenter y John Bettis, convirtiéndose en un Nº 1 para el dúo estadounidense Carpenters.

El tema apareció dentro de su álbum A Song for You e inicialmente iba a formar parte del repertorio del disco, sin destacarla como single, pero cuando la cantante de country estadounidense Lynn Anderson lanzó una versión en 1973 con la que consiguió un gran éxito, Carpenters se molestó porque ellos no habían lanzado su versión como sencillo, haciéndolo finalmente más tarde.

Karen Carpenter volvió a grabar su voz principal para el lanzamiento del sencillo porque no estaba satisfecha con la grabación original y la nueva versión apareció en el primer álbum recopilatorio del dúo que se llamo The Singles: 1969-1973.

The End of the World

The End of the World es una preciosa y melancólica canción escrita por el compositor estadounidense Arthur Kent y escrita por la letrista y novelita estadounidense Sylvia Dee para la cantante estadounidense Skeeter Davis, con la que alcanzó un gran éxito en la década de los 60.

La canción la grabó en 1962 y fue producida por el músico y compositor Chet Atkins.

A lo largo de los años ha tenido varias versiones, entre las que destaca la que en 1975 hicieron el dúo Carpenters y una que me tiene enamorada, interpretada por la cantante y compositora Sharon Van Etten y que aparece en 2017 dentro de la maravillosa banda sonora de la serie The Man in the Hight Castle.
