Cada vez que escucho Beside You la siento como una ráfaga de aire fresco en medio de un camino largo y escuchar a James Blunt en este registro es como ver a un viejo amigo que, después de hacernos llorar con sus baladas, nos invita a bailar para celebrar que seguimos aquí.

Se lanzó el 2 de agosto de 2023 como el primer sencillo de su séptimo álbum de estudio, Who We Used to Be. Es el James Blunt más bailable y optimista que hemos escuchado en mucho tiempo y lo que hace que la melodía se te pegue al alma es que utiliza una pequeña interpolación de Alla luce del giorno, del gran maestro Ennio Morricone y esa mezcla de modernidad y clasicismo es pura magia.

Publicada bajo el sello Atlantic Records UK, la canción fue coescrita por el propio James junto a Richard Boardman, David Strääf y James Essien. Aunque sonó durante varias semanas en las listas británicas, donde realmente arrasó fue en Polonia, donde llegó al número 2 de las listas de radio consiguiendo el Disco de Platino.

Hoy me dejo llevar por una canción que todavía conserva la capacidad de encender la pista... Rock DJ de Robbie Williams, un tema que marcó un momento clave en su carrera.

Rock DJ se publicó en julio de 2000 como primer sencillo del álbum Sing When You’re Winning, editado por Chrysalis Records. La canción está escrita por Robbie Williams, Guy Chambers y Kelvin Andrews, el equipo creativo que definió buena parte del sonido más exitoso de Robbie a comienzos de los años 2000 y el single alcanzó el número 1 en las listas del Reino Unido, convirtiéndose en su tercer número uno en el Reino Unido y en la cuarta canción más vendida del año 2000 en dicho país.

Musicalmente, Rock DJ es una explosión de pop bailable con raíces claras en el disco y el funk. Uno de sus rasgos más conocidos es el pegajoso sample de cuerdas que recorre todo el tema y que pertenece a la canción It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me del gigante del soul Barry White, un detalle que conecta la canción con la tradición disco de los años setenta y le da ese groove tan contagioso con un ritmo constante y una producción muy cuidada.

Imposible hablar de Rock DJ sin mencionar su videoclip, dirigido por Vaughan Arnell. Estrenado también en el año 2000, generó una enorme polémica por su contenido gráfico ya que Robbie baila hasta despojarse literalmente de su piel y músculos. El vídeo fue censurado o emitido con cortes en varias cadenas y aun así se convirtió en uno de los clips más comentados de la época consiguiendo ganar el premio al Mejor Video en los BRIT Awards de 2001.

Con los años, Rock DJ ha seguido teniendo vida propia en los directos de Robbie Williams y en recopilatorios, y más recientemente, en 2024, la canción vuelve a aparecer vinculada a su historia personal a través de la película Better Man, el biopic musical centrado en su vida y carrera. En el contexto del filme, Rock DJ forma parte del recorrido musical que revisita sus grandes éxitos, conectando esa etapa de éxito arrollador con una mirada más madura sobre lo que significó y cobra una dimensión artística completamente nueva. Al representar a Robbie como un chimpancé generado por CGI, la canción se convierte en una metáfora visual impactante sobre su sentimiento de ser un "mono de feria" para la industria. En el filme, la secuencia de esta canción es un despliegue visual de locura que nos hace entender ese escalofrío de una forma más cruda... el precio de la fama.

Cuando la escucho hoy, siento que sigue teniendo ese pulso irresistible, pero también otra lectura... ya no solo es una canción para bailar, sino el reflejo de una época, de una forma de entender el pop y el espectáculo, de un artista que se entregaba por completo al escenario. Hoy quiero detenerme en una canción que me ha acompañado durante estos días con esa chispa que te recorre por dentro cuando algo te gusta y mucho. Hablo de Set My Heart On Fire (I’m Alive x And The Beat Goes On), un tema que une la voz luminosa de la cantante canadiense Céline Dion con la energía electrónica del productor británico Majestic y del DJ The Jammin Kid.

Los autores de la canción son Andreas Michael Carlsson, Kristian Lundin, William Shelby, Leon Sylvers y Stephen Shockley, y se publicó como single en junio de 2024, respaldada por Sony Music Entertainment Canada, después de que un mash-up creado por The Jammin Kid se volviera viral.

El proyecto combina dos mundos, por un lado I’m Alive, la canción original de Céline Dion incluida en su álbum A New Day Has Come de 2002 y And the Beat Goes On, el clásico de The Whispers, publicado originalmente en 1979 con ese sonido disco que nunca envejece.

El resultado es una mezcla de pop, dance y esencia retro, con una estructura pensada para el baile y una producción pulida que realza aún más la voz de Céline sobre una base completamente nueva, más eléctrica y expansiva.

DJ Play A Christmas Song es el primer sencillo del álbum navideño de estas Navidades del 2023 que va a venir de la mano de la cantante californiana Cher, que llevará por título Christmas y que es su primer disco en sus casi 60 años de carrera dedicado a canciones navideñas, que además contará con increíbles duetos, con los que tampoco ha contado a lo largo de su carrera discográfica.

La canción no parece navideña, la verdad sea dicha, pero eso es lo que me gusta de ella, que es una canción para escucharla en cualquier momento, para bailarla, cantarla y disfrutarla a todas horas y que tiene todas las papeletas para convertirse en un nº 1 y volverse icónica, como lo es la propia Cher.
